Hearing Voices

Hearing Voices

Dear Friend,

Several years ago I worked in the corporate world and would spend a lot of my life sitting in traffic.

I can remember one particular commute so clearly. I was on my way to work, car inching along the highway, a tight grip on the steering wheel, blank stare in my eyes, shoulders slouched over, and a pit in my stomach (which was common those days).

Amidst the talk radio show banter in the background a voice rose up within me saying, “there has got to me more to life than this.” And it kept repeating it.

“There has got to be more to life than this. There has got to be more to life than this.”

I didn’t know where this voice was coming from. I wasn’t really thinking it but more sensing it like the way you sense someone looking over your shoulder.

This phrase followed me around for weeks.

And as it followed me things seemed to feel more and more off in my life.

I didn’t really know how to make this voice go away so I thought I just needed a new job.

At first I blamed the commute. “It must be the hours in my car that’s making me feel this way,” I thought, “So I’ll find a job closer to home and that’ll fix it.”

I began looking for new work but nothing was panning out.

Around this same time, and without really connecting the dots, I started to really seek more from a spiritual standpoint. I was beginning to think about things like – why are we here? what does this all mean? are purpose/destiny really a thing?

I believe now that as I began to ask those larger questions, they were in turn waking up this voice inside me.

What I didn’t realize then was this was my inner wisdom beginning to guide me.

Many times this voice begins as a whisper, a gentle nudge that something needs to change.

For so many of us we hear the voice while not even trying to hear the voice.

There are ways we can intentionally hear the voice like thru meditation and prayer, but there are also times in life when we’ll start to unintentionally hear it, like while sitting in our daily commute.

The voice can serve as a GPS in our life. It can let us know if something is right or wrong or let us know it’s time for a change.

It doesn’t speak really thru our minds – it comes through our bodies – more of a sensing/feeling. It’s more of a gut instinct – which is a very real thing and our inner wisdom at work.

Our inner wisdom voice is soft, quiet, articulate, kind.

We can be certain we are not hearing our inner wisdom if the voice is loud, cruel, blaming, fearful. This is the voice of the ego.

But it often starts with a whisper from this voice that we aren’t trying to hear.

Have you started to hear the voice? What did it feel/sound like? What did it say?

If there is one thing I can say as you begin to hear this voice is to be open to what it is whispering and trust it.

This voice knows your highest path and it trying to guide you there.

You got this.

Love,

Laura
