It’s Never Too Late
Dear friend,
Recently I noticed a pattern in myself…
Most nights I enjoy some Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime. Inevitably I’ll look up whatever show I’m watching to learn more about the actors. Without even realizing it the first thing I always check out is their age.
This felt so harmless at first but then I realized this uncomfortable thing going on in me.
No matter what the actor’s age, it created this feeling of being behind in my own life.
If they are younger I tell myself I should have started younger. If they are older I tell myself they were so successful by the time they were my age…what is wrong with me?!
Then a few weeks ago I saw this graphic online and it felt like letting out a giant exhale after unconsciously holding my breath for seven years.
I’m not sure why we think we’ve got to have it all figured out and “successful” (whatever that means, anyway) by the time we’re 30.
It seems that if we take any other path than the one that tells us how to be successful by a young age, that we are somehow doing life wrong.
But what about those of use who choose a non-traditional path and decide to start that path later on?
I believe that we often find out what we want to be doing by first experiencing what we don’t want to be doing and both those paths take time to flesh out.
I have by no means overcome this age trap…I fall into it often but I’m working to overcome it by embracing getting older and where I am in my journey.
Friend, have you told yourself it’s too late to go after what you want? Or like me that you’re somehow behind?
What if the opposite were actually true?
What if you’ve been given this gift of age / maturity / wisdom…getting closer to the people we always should have been, as David Bowie says, and THAT is actually working for you?
The life experience and self awareness are only going to help and provide a leg up than if you were going through this at 20 years old.
It’s not too late.
It’s never too late.
You are allowed to change your mind and follow a different path. You are allowed to go after your dreams at any age. We’ve all got our own journey to take and for a lot of us we don’t get clear on our thing until later in life. The important thing is to not give up on your thing or let your mind convince you your time has passed.
So let’s start to look at age with new eyes. Let’s look at is as a gift given to us. Let’s not praise outer youthful beauty but the beauty that comes from hard earned forehead and smile lines. The wisdom that come from the gray hairs. The inner beauty that comes from learning who we are and what we’re capable of. Sure, maybe we need to work a little harder to keep our metabolism running well and our joints from aching but we can’t have it all, can we?! 🙂
Will you join me in embracing age and all the benefits that come from getting older?
It’s never ever too late to start.
You got this.
Love,
Laura
