Re-Defining Purpose & Greatness
Dear Friend,
I used to be intimidated by words like purpose and greatness. These words equated to the pie in the sky idea of following my dreams and for most of my life didn’t think I had a purpose or a dream to follow. Sure, every so often I’d let myself imagine what could be possible, but deep down I thought following a dream or being “great” was for other people, not me.
Life has a funny way about it though and seven years ago, after much change and clarity, I decided to go for my dreams. Through this dream chasing process, I’ve learned we put too much pressure on these ideas of purpose and greatness.
For a long time I believed purpose meant how we were to make a living. I equated purpose with career and that being “great” at something meant lots of followers, likes, and money. (I am a product of western culture, after all.)
In my brain, purpose and greatness were being confused with status and achievements.
Now I look at these words with a much softer gaze.
Purpose and greatness are simply about being of service to others.
Each of us can do something that will greatly impact someone else for the better. Maybe it’s one person, maybe it’s a community, maybe its a very large platform of people. It will vary by person but we’ve all got something that is ours to give to others.
Our true purpose here is to help each other.
As Mother Teresa said, “We belong to each other” and Ram Das, “We are all just walking each other home.”
This has taken the pressure off when it comes to being “great”. True greatness is showing up for others, realizing that what we do for each other we also do for ourselves.
What would you do if you knew it could impact someone else for the better? How can you take one step toward doing that right now?
You got this.
Love,
Laura
