Venturing into the Unknown

Venturing into the Unknown

Dear friend,

The world often laughs at phrases like “follow your heart” or “listen to your inner wisdom” and to an extent I get it. It sounds a bit silly and esoteric. I suppose I would laugh along if I hadn’t experienced these heart nudges and inner knowings firsthand.

Maybe you’ve felt these heart nudges too? They often show up as if your whole body is saying yes; every cell in your body dancing with delight at the thought of the idea. There’s an excitement that comes along with theses nudges and knowings. They hold a sense of possibility and potential beyond what the world has told us to do with our lives.

So why do we ignore the nudges?

I think a lot of time we chalk the nudges up to wishful thinking that could never really happen. It’s understandable that we have this response because we aren’t taught how to follow the path of the heart but I hope that we can change that!

The path will require us to step out of the mold and take some risks. This is often challenging because we are conditioned to like certainty and to have a clear path to follow. But I try to remind myself of what Joseph Campbell said, “If the path before you is clear, you’re probably on someone else’s.”

So we need to get comfortable with a bit of uncertainty, but we also need to learn how to navigate liminal space – the transitional time where we’re no longer who we were but not yet who we hope to become. It can be uncomfortable to just sorta float in our existence but it’s often necessary when we venture off for a little while.

When I first ventured off on my own, I started an online coaching business. I can remember the early days and trying to find my footing. I would awkwardly explain to people what I did as a life coach, trying to appear confident while also feeling like a fraud because I had nothing to show for this dream.

Living in the liminal space often felt more challenging than the actual process of launching a business. During those times I held on to other people’s stories (often people I didn’t know personally) who had gone for their dreams. I had to go on faith for a while that if they could do it then in my own way, I could too.

So dear friend, this path will require a bit of courage and faith to start. But remember you only ever have to take one small step at a time. Your life is worth it. Hold tight to what your heart is nudging you towards, be brave, and find others who have gone before you in following their dream and are now doing it.

Remember you may set out with one particular goal in mind but the point of this path is not to just reach that certain goal. The point of the path is to develop you into the person you are capable of being.

What is your heart pulling you towards? Let us know, we are here to support you in following that nudge.

You got this.

Love,

Laura
